Fall is the Time to Think Spring Bulbs!

September 3, 2013 | By webadmin

While it may seem a tad early to be talking about spring bulbs, now is the time to start planning your spring bulb display. You may notice spring bulbs like daffodils showing up at garden centers any day, along with tulips, Iris and many more. If you're thinking about adding bulbs to your landscape, now is a great time to make some choices.

Halleck hyacinth

Bulbs like daffodils (Narcissus), Muscari, Lycoris, Leucojum, bearded Iris and many others can be perennialized with little effort in our climate. Byzantine Gladiolus, oxblood lilies and certain grape hyacinth are great Texas heirloom varieties that will thrive in your low maintenance garden. Tulips, on the other hand, do require a pre-chilling in order to produce uniform blooms in our area. You'll want to make sure you either purchase pre-chilled tulips, or make sure your landscaping company is planting pre-chilled tulips. Here at Roundtree Landscaping, we plant thousands of tulips each December and always make sure we offer the best quality pre-chilled bulbs.

From a design perspective, most people make the mistake of planting too few bulbs. What they end up with is a thin display that doesn't match the picture they had in their head. You always need more than you think you do! Think about how bulbs look in nature; they are usually growing in large clumps and clusters. Each of those clumps may have 100 bulbs in them. When planning your spring bulb display, think about planting large clumps rather than single rows of bulbs.

There are many great bulbs to choose from this fall that will make your garden a stand out come spring. The great thing about bulbs is that they can be incorporated into existing landscape beds or even into turf. Daffodils are excellent for naturalizing in lawn areas. If you want to plant pansies with tulips, it's best to plant the tulips first, in mid-December, then over plant with the pansies. We can customize an annual color program for you that makes sure you have beautiful fall color that lasts through the first frost, then we can plant your tulips and pansies together.

If you'd like to add perennial or annual bulbs to your existing landscape let us know. We can also design a spectacular spring bulb display for you and install it this fall and winter.
