Summer Lawn Aeration: Should I aerate now?

With the summer warming up and rainfall diminishing, it’s time to think about what cultural practices are still needed during the “Dog Days of Summer" to maintain a healthy lawn.

With less rainfall and the ongoing watering restrictions it’s very important to do an early summer core aeration on your turf. After having some very well timed rains in early spring the soils have now had time to dry out and will continue to expand and contract with the limited amounts of allowable irrigation. By aerating your turf, it will open up the soils sub-surface and lessen compaction from the rainy season and early spring traffic. The small soil plugs removed through the process of core aeration allow the limited watering and rain fall to easily percolate through the soil rather than run off. Excess run off is caused by severe soil compaction. By aerating, you’ll allow water to reach root zone; and also allow for all the available nutrients that are existing in the soil to be utilized by the plants root systems.
