Winter Is On My Head

The best thing about winter is that we can plant many trees and shrubs in North Texas and give their roots time to establish before the heat of summer. So get out your shovel on one of our warm days and dig a hole twice as wide and no deeper than the rootball and preferably 1-2” shallower as the root ball. Follow the planting directions on the tree tag. The surface of the root ball should be even with the surface of the ground when you’re finished planting. Backfill around the root with the dirt you dug out to create the hole. Add one bag of compost mixed well with the native soil for every 2” of caliper tree.  Our trees should be able to establish themselves in our soil with just the addition of organic matter.
