Designing Spaces that Bridge Indoor to Outdoor Living

March 27, 2019 | By webadmin

Spring is the ideal time in Texas to be enjoying your outdoor living spaces and landscape. To make the most of your outdoor living, you’ll want to create a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor spaces. This week we share some pro-designer tips to make your indoor and outdoor spaces blend effectively.

Build a patio

A patio positioned directly outside of your home, when done correctly, can feel like stepping into another room. Match or coordinate the color and the look of your patio materials to your adjacent indoor flooring. If your patio is built off of your living room or kitchen, and you have gray colored flooring or tile, then go for similarly colored decking or stone for the patio. The consistency will make both spaces feel like one larger space.

Patios help define your outdoor rooms.

Open up the view

Have a standard kitchen or living room door that leads outdoors? Consider opening up the view by replacing it with a wider set of glass sliding doors, french doors, or adding panel windows. By reducing closed wall space, you’ll open up the view to your outdoor entertaining areas, making both your indoor and outdoor spaces feel larger and connected.

Keep it covered & comfortable

In Texas, creating some shade for your outdoor spaces is a must. Patio covers also help protect from rain and wind. Covers such as pergolas and automated shades also help seamlessly connect your indoor and outdoor living areas. Building some covered hardscape also creates the opportunity to add electrical for lighting and ceiling fans.

Don’t sit in the dark

No one likes sitting in the dark, but they also don’t like blinding spotlights. Use soft warm lighting outdoors to create a serene, calming and inviting atmosphere. Make sure to place lighting along access points or pathways to guide visitors to your outdoor space. Choose outdoor light fixtures that reflect the style of your indoor fixtures for seamless style.

Extend your style

To reflect your indoor style outdoors, you can also coordinate your outdoor furniture and accessories with adjacent living spaces. The variety of patio furniture, rugs and other fixtures has exploded in the last few years. Sometimes we can’t tell the difference between indoor and outdoor furniture! If you have a clean modern look indoors, mimic the same style outdoors. If you prefer comfy traditional, go for the same furniture style on your patio. Similar style can even be accomplished with simple accessories, such as patterned pillows that coordinate with your living room, or color coordinated pottery.
