Landscape Irrigation Maintenance Checkup

April 15, 2013 | By webadmin

irrigation xmSummer is coming! With warmer temperatures just around the corner, your landscape will soon have increasing water needs. You want to make sure to deliver just the right amount of water for healthy plants, without wasting any of this precious resource. A great way to do that is to make sure your irrigation system is in tip-top shape and leak-free. Regular irrigation maintenance is essential. Identifying problems now, before the summer heat, will keep your system running at peak performance

Here are a few important items you'll want to have checked before summer:

1. A full physical inspection of all irrigation circuit boards and wiring. Remove any debris.

2. Replace any backup batteries.

3. Reset your controller to run the automated schedule that is appropriate for the season. Go through the entire program to check for any errors.

4. Check and clean the rain sensor. Make sure it is enabled.

There are other items an irrigation specialist will check for, but these are the basics. Then, you'll want to make sure you run and test each station from the controller. All of your zones should come on and shut down properly from the controller. Make sure to fill out the reference chart inside your controller that tells you where each zone is in your landscape.

Make sure there are no leaks or broken heads; if so repair and replace. Then, check to see that the type of nozzle affixed to each head is right for the area it is watering. Certain nozzles may spray too far, missing the intended plant material...or they may not reach far enough.
