Mid-Century Modern Curb Appeal

March 14, 2014 | By webadmin

Do you own one of the area’s many Mid-Century Modern homes? These homes take a special sort of landscaping to enhance the simple, clean lines of the home but also soften some of the hard lines.

How do you define a mid-century modern home? Usually, this is a home built between 1940 and 1960 with a simple design, functionality, clean features, minimal embellishments; slanted or flat roofs and an integration with nature. Keeping the landscaping simple, natural and clean will highlight your mid-century modern home beautifully.

Elements of Mid Century styled landscape include water-wise plants; a repetition of color, texture and specimen plants. Using hardscape, such as symmetrical pavers, to create patios or pathways is a great way to accent your mid-century and extend entertaining space to the outdoors.

Connecting the front and backyard landscaping can give your entire property a cohesive appeal and soften the hard design lines of mid-century modern home. Add pops of retro color by using pottery, furniture or even painting your front door in turquoise, chartreuse or orange color.

The details to creating a “MCM” landscape include contemporary address numbers, boulders placed naturally around the landscape, colorful outdoor furniture, vintage accessories, and symmetrical pavers. Some of the plants we feel suit a MCM architecture include:

Ornamental Grasses

Agaves

Nandina

Yucca

Horsetail Reed

Mondo Grass

Cast Iron Plant

Cordyline

Sedum

Japanese Maples
