Water-wise Plant Ideas for Texas Landscapes

March 11, 2014 | By webadmin

A landscape that can stand up to our Texas sun and heat doesn’t have to be filled with only plants like cactus and agaves; although we do love them!  Heat hardy and water-wise landscapes can also be lush and green with a bit of planning and a lot of creativity. Choosing the right plant for the right place goes a long way to creating a successful landscape design.  We specialize in creating landscapes that are easy to maintain, hold up to the heat and have visual interest year-round by using the right plant choices.

Shrubs that take the heat are wonderful backdrops for perennials such as Salvias and Lantana. One of our favorite Texas tough shrubs is Texas sage. With it's beautiful silver foliage and bountiful blooms, it's the perfect foundation shrub for a water-wise landscape. Rosemary is also an excellent evergreen choice for low-maintenance and low-water gardens. Nandinas might seem old-school, but with many new varieties on the market you should definitely re-think using these tough-as-nails shrubs. Antique and Earth-Kind roses provide gorgeous blooms but are often very low-maintenance.

Perennials like mounding Artemesia or low growing sedum will look gorgeous, even in the middle of summer. Ornamental grasses like Pennisetum and Miscanthus offer up texture and foliage with little care required.

Accessorize with rock streams and natural boulders in a variety of shapes and you'll have an easy-to-maintain garden that looks like you’ve spent all summer taking care of!
