Could Your Irrigation Be in Need of a Repair?

March 9, 2015 | By webadmin

When was the last time you had your irrigation system audited? An annual audit of your automatic sprinkler system can alert you of leaks, broken heads, pressure problems and other issues affecting your system. If it’s been awhile since you had your irrigation checked, we recommend you have an irrigation specialist do so before you get your spring gardening on!

Signs your system needs a repair:

Are parts of your landscape too dry while other areas are overwatered? You may have a leak somewhere in the system that’s preventing certain areas from receiving the water they need. Perhaps your zones are set incorrectly or perhaps a head is broken and in need of repair or replacement.

If there is not enough water emerging from sprinkler heads, this could be a sign that not enough pressure is getting to all areas of the landscape. A lack of pressure could be due to a leak or broken heads; or it could be that the system wasn’t designed properly. There could be a problem with a valve or it could be an issue with your backflow preventer. Often the causes of the problem won’t be obvious to you. Before more plants are damaged and water is lost, have a pro check it out.

There is too much water emerging from sprinkler heads. Again, this is a pressure problem that can be caused by different factors. When the pressure on any given zone is too high, you can lose a huge percentage of your irrigation water to evaporation! You might think you’ve watered your lawn or landscape enough, but most of that water could just be going up into the air instead of to your plants.

Increase in water bills. If you haven’t made any changes to your landscape such as added new beds or a new lawn, but your bill keeps increasing, then you could have a leak somewhere in your system. It could be a single leaking valve or it could something much worse regarding the pipes below ground.

In addition to having your system thoroughly checked over but an irrigation specialist, you should also think about installing a Smart Controller. Smart controllers can help you be sure you’re watering different kinds of plants in your landscape the right way, without wasting water.
