Marsala: Bring the Latest Pantone Color Trend to Your Garden
May 14, 2015 | By webadmin
Do you scour fashion and interior design magazines looking for the latest trends in color and style? If so, then you’ve probably seen the Pantone Color of the year 2015 “Marsala”. Each year, Pantone chooses a color inspired by the latest colors being used in home and fashion. We often look to design trends when choosing colors for the landscape. “Marsala” is rich and sophisticated, reminiscent of a deep burgundy wine. We love this year’s winning color because its warm reddish hue with natural brown undertones reminds us of some of our favorite plants.
In the landscape, plants that offer foliage or flowers in shades of burgundy and wine are rich and bold. Combine them with chartreuse, deep purples and white for a stunning combination. You can introduce “Marsala” to your landscape with plants like Heuchera ‘Sparkling Burgundy’ or ‘Sugar Plum’. Coleus is a wonderful, tough annual known for its colorful foliage. Coleus are perfect for our climate and they work great in both containers or in the ground. Many varieties offer up “Marsala” colored foliage. Pair with chartreuse sweet potato vine and white impatiens for a striking effect. Pennisetum ‘Fireworks’ is an ornamental grass that features 3-foot blades of grass tinged with green, white, pink and burgundy. In summer through fall it blooms with tufts of feathery “flowers”.
Spotlight: Tough & Pretty Nandina!
Looking for a beautiful, hardy shrub that can take shade or sun? Nandina is one of the most versatile shrubs for our area. It’s evergreen drought tolerant and super easy to grow. ‘Obsession” offers up the perfect dose of “Marsala” colored leaves. At only 3-feet tall and wide, this compact, drought tolerant shrub would fit almost any landscape. Plant it along with a variety of perennials and annuals, from purple salvia and red lantana, to white oxeye daisy and orange lilies.
