Favorite Perennial: Hellebore (Lenten Rose)

November 13, 2014 | By webadmin

With our extreme weather shifts here in North Texas, we’re always looking for plants that are both heat hardy and cold hardy. Plants that will not only thrive during weather extremes, but also look great doing it! Perennial Hellebore, or Lenten Rose, is an excellent low-maintenance plant that tolerates our clay soil, summer heat, shady gardens and blooms in winter!

Favorite features include:

  • elegant, upright blooms in shades of chartreuse green, white, blush and even red.
  • drought tolerant
  • Blooms in winter & early spring
  • Evergreen
  • tolerates shady afternoon gardens that get some morning sun

In the past, this tough and showy perennial was known for blooms that “drooped”. However, new varieties offer cheery upright flowers that really put on a show. Fall is a prime time to plant perennials, and Hellebore is no exception. Look for varieties with flower shades of green, white, pink and even deep burgundy.
