Want Texas Tough Perennials? Plant Daffodils!

When we design landscapes, our priority is to satisfy you, the customer. When you tell us you want easy-to-maintain, heat tolerant, beautiful and blooming plants, we listen! We often discuss perennials on our blog, and we also talk about bulbs. This post combines the two. One of our favorite Texas-tough perennials is also a bulb.

Daffodils are bright, easy-to-maintain, spring-blooming perennials. And now is the time to plant them! While you could plant daffodils throughout the year, the best selection is available now.

Here in north Texas, many varieties of daffodils perennialize, meaning they come back year after year. Just water and feed for reliable blooms from February through April. We suggest planting both early-mid and mid-late blooming varieties to ensure blooms late winter through spring.

Some of our favorite varieties include:

‘Carlton’ (Lg cup) Soft yellow petals with bright yellow blooms make this reliable favorite one of the most popular varieties. Blooms early spring. Grows to 16”.

‘Pink Charm’ (Lg cup) Looking for something other than yellow in the landscape? This variety has a peachy-pink, ruffled cup with white petals. Blooms mid-spring. Grows to 20”.

‘Cheerfulness’ (Lg cup) Cheery (just like the name!) double-petaled blooms in white and yellow. Bonus: It often bears several flowers per stem. Blooms in late spring. Grows to 16”.

‘Dutch Master’ (Trumpet) The classic, bright yellow daffodil. We love this one planted in large sweeps of gold across drought tolerant landscapes. Grows to 18”.

‘Thalia’ (Sm cup) This lightly fragranced, pure white daffodil is delicate and charming. Blooms mid to late spring. Grows to 14”.

‘Jetfire’ (Sm cup) Early spring blooming daffodil with bold, contrasting, bright yellow blooms and orange centers. Pops against dark colored shrubs in the garden! Grows to 10”.

‘Hoop Petticoats’ Want a unique, diminutive bloom? ‘Hoop Petticoats’ will fill that request. At only 10” tall, this solid yellow, delicate, spidery flower is perfect in pots or as a delightful border.

Whether you’d like to make a dynamic impact with large swaths of color or have natural, meadow-like clumps of blooms in your landscape, we can help you design the spring garden of your dreams.
