Contemporary Landscape Design: Crisp, Clean & Elegant

November 4, 2014 | By webadmin

A beautiful home deserves a beautiful landscape. When it comes to designing a new landscape, complementing the home’s architecture and style is a primary part of the process. This home’s crisp, clean, white lines and modern appeal begged for a simple, understated design that was still strong on style. We transformed what was a nondescript landscape into a stunning contemporary urban oasis! Clean lines and neutral colors were key to the success of this new installation. A large pool and spa tub are framed by modern and clean plantings. Ornamental grasses, strategically placed gravel and unique lighting complement the home's unique architecture and style.

Never forget the lighting: The best way to enjoy your landscape after dark is with good lighting. These simple glass and metal lights to keep the landscape bright and the mood modern.

The entry to this home is bold and bright, yet neutral in color. We wanted to complement the stunning stonework without distracting from it. An important element of contemporary design is to keep the overall palette simple; that includes the choice of plant material. We chose ornamental grasses that bloom in tones similar to that of the stone and strategically placed them along the walkway. The emerald green foliage offers up a soothing contrast to the stone. They help create a flow of energy and movement as you enter the home. These grasses are also very low-maintenance and water-wise. The gray river rock that frames the sides provides neutral contrast in addition to assisting with drainage.

To compliment the backyard pool and jacuzzi, we continued the clean and sophisticated lines with the landscape. White stone and charcoal colored stone tile flank the organically shaped pool. A simple waterfall from the spa tub creates the soothing sounds of moving water.  We installed a large lawn area to frame the pool and patio.  The arrangement of the plantings around the foundation and patio are also clean and modern.

Modern metal planters adorn the patio and act as space dividers. Planted with low-maintenance bamboo, they’ll look good year-round with little care.

A stunning re-circulating water feature sculpture anchors the back corner of the home and creates a unique focal point for the entire backyard. Low-maintenance groundcovers and shrubs create an easy on the eye backdrop of solid green.

When designing a landscape for a very modern home, “design restraint” is one concept we must embrace. It’s easy to want to embellish the landscape more than is required for this style of home. Complement without competition is the end goal for a modern landscape design.
