The Best Way to Enjoy Spring Bulbs

September 8, 2014 | By webadmin

Why is fall our favorite time of year? Because it’s the very best time to plant just about everything in Texas, including spring blooming bulbs. The very best way for you to enjoy spring bulbs is to plant them this fall! If you want to create a stunning spring welcome in your garden, now is the time to start planning which bulbs you’d like to grow. Bulb availability will be at its best during the fall months and special colors can also be requested.

Daffodils are one of the easiest perennial bulbs you can grow in Dallas gardens. They are perfect for planting in natural areas of the landscape where you don’t do much maintenance; under deciduous shade trees; or even mixed into perennial beds. Large trumpet type daffodils tend not to multiply well, whereas small cupped daffodils will naturalize easily.

Love tulips? We do too! But, they have to be replanted each year here in the Dallas area. Tulips require a chilling period, called vernalization, prior to developing a flower bud. With our warm winter soils, that chilling period can be tough to achieve. We use pre-chilled tulips bulbs when we plant tulips. The optimal time to plant tulips in Dallas is after Thanksgiving, preferably by the end of December for best success.

There are many other beautiful spring bulbs we can enjoy here in North Texas. Dutch Iris, allium, hyacinth, summer snowflake, crocus and many more. We can design a special area of your landscape with bulbs to be used as a cutting garden, or integrate them into your ornamental landscape.

Have a favorite color? Chances are you can find bulb colors to match. We love to check out the new Pantone color trends each year for new combination ideas. Also, remember that most bulb varieties are categorized as early, mid- or late-blooming. By planting early and late blooming bulbs together, we can significantly extend the spring bloom season. Once spring rolls around, you’ll be thrilled at the amazing display of color from early spring through early summer.

When we are planning for spring blooming bulbs, we take soil, sun and timing into consideration, in addition to your specific design aesthetics. Soil will be amended, the right varieties will be chosen for the right space and they’ll be planted at the right time. Most bulbs love the sun, but bulbs  such as summer snowflake (Leucojum sp.) or daffodils can take a bit of shade.

When it comes to planning your outdoor living space, we know you could be overwhelmed with options! We invite you to browse and be inspired on Pinterest and Houzz, then bring us your favorite designs. We’ll create a space perfect for you and your family!
